LANZAROTE 2 UNIÓN VIERA 1
LANZAROTE 2 UNIÓN VIERA 1
14th September 2014
The good start to the season continues as the Rojillos hold out the final 25 minutes with just 10 men in scorching heat to become one of only three teams to remain unbeaten.
Lanzarote began the game superbly as they looked to get off the mark early against the Gran Canarian side.
The opening goal came in the 16th minute. Man of the match Echedey won the ball in midfield and put through on goal his Captain Rosmen, the striker drew the keeper then returned the pass unselfishly to Echedey who had the simple task of stroking the ball into the empty net and send his side 1-0 up.
The Rojillos were looking good value especially with the Colombian striker Mauri creating havoc for the Gran Canarian defence down the left flank. This lad looks exciting and will certainly score and create goals this season. At one point he beat a host of defenders and shot at goal which went into the side netting but really had he kept his composure he could have laid on a sitter to a team mate.
Unión Viera began to find their feet and were having some joy down the left wing. On one occasion a superb cross from the left found midfielder Joel but from eight yards he was unable to keep his strike down as the ball flew over the bar and Lanzarote went into the break with that slight advantage.
The second half began wonderfully for the Rojillos. Only three minutes into the second period and a poor defensive clearance found British boy Brad who on a half volley wonderfully struck the ball into the top left hand corner scoring his first goal for the Rojillos and in doing so doubling his sides lead to 2-0.
A couple of minutes later Rosmen could have killed the game off when he was put through by Echedey but unusually for the skipper he got caught in two minds whether to shoot or pass to Kennedy as he saw his effort go horribly wrong.
In the 55th the visitors were well and truly back into the match when striker Alex Peraza headed home following a corner to make it 2-1.
In the 68th minute things went sour. The Lanzarote players took the law into their own hands when the Ref did nothing when Rosmen received an elbow across the face. Brad could not hold back his frustration and landed a right hook which completely floored the Unión Viera player. It had been a mixed week for Brad as he had just celebrated his 19th birthday, scored his first goal and now received his first red card for his new club.
Lanzarote now had big problems as they had to survive 20 minutes plus in soaring heat to keep alive their 100% home record.
The Lanzarote defence was superb and on the break the home side looked the more threatening. The crowd albeit small due to the islands largest fiesta taking place at the same time willed their side on and cheered every challenge and every kick until at last the official blew for full time.
Lanzarote after four games have drawn their two away matches and won their two home games and are fourth in the league table. The next match is away but on Lanzarote. The Rojillos will travel a few kilometres south and face the in form Yaiza. The derby match is on Saturday and kick off is at 4.45pm at the Yaiza stadium. Obviously season tickets are invalid here.
