UD LANZAROTE WINNERS OF THE SAN GINÉS TOURNAMENT 2025

Last night Lanzarote became champions of the four team, 56th edition of the San Ginés tournament which was held at Ciudad Deportiva in Arrecife.

The Rojillos (Fifth Tier) met RFEF 2 (Fourth Tier) side Xerez CD in the final and whilst the visitors went into the break 0-1 in front with a superb headed goal from Sissokho in the 23rd minute it was Lanzarote centre back Agoney who headed his side level less than a minute into the second half.

The match was decided on penalties and the Rojillos hero on many an occasion Ruyman saved the first penalty. Neither team missed one after that so it was left to Alex Cruz to slot the ball home on the final penalty to give Lanzarote the San Ginés trophy.

To our right Alex Cruz who scored the winning penalty and Ruyman saved the first from Xerez CD.

Lanzarote have played in three pre season tournaments and have won them all however manager Ángel López and his management team knows this means very little if they cannot maintain this form going into the first league match which is at home next Sunday 7th September versus CD Tenerife C with kickoff confirmed at 12 noon.

After the award ceremony the four competing teams and officials were invited to Aura (next to the Cabildo) for a wonderful meal and drinks to celebrate the end of San Ginés 2025. Only in Spain will you have your main course served at 1am. It was a fantastic evening.

I spoke to officials from both mainland sides Xerez CD and UD San Sebastian de los Reyes and they have been delighted with their stay on the island and they have been overwhelmed of the beauty of Lanzarote and were astonished at the quality of surface and facilities at Ciudad Deportiva.

The club would like to thank Eli Merino (Arrecife Sports Minister) and everyone involved at the Arrecife Ayuntamiento for a great tournament and helping to put the players into the right frame of mind for the season ahead.

VAMOS ROJILLOS!!!
