UD VILLA SANTA BRÍGIDA   1   LANZAROTE   2

The Rojillos briefly moved up to 3rd in the table following their second win on the bounce, though once other fixtures had been completed over the weekend they found themselves moving up from 8th spot and finally settling in 5th place.

Over the years it has not been an easy hunting ground for Lanzarote but with confidence on a high it seemed a good opportunity to claim all three points.

Captain Ayoze Pérez was absent to a rib injury though is now on the mend but it was his deputy Miguel Gómez who had the first opportunity in the 3rd minute, he had to strike from 12 yards quickly and didn’t make the connection that he would have hoped for resulting in a comfortable save for the goalkeeper.

It was quite an even match though it was the Rojillos who did seem to have the edge however the Gran Canaria side were a whisker away from taking the lead as a shot struck the post in the 31st minute.

Two minutes later and striker Rubo chipped the ball into the path of the new 19 year old sensation Alyson, the Brazilians pace got him to the ball first then two defenders sandwiched him resulting in an easy decision for the referee to order a spot kick. Rubo stepped up and sent the keeper the wrong way to give his side a 0-1 lead with his third goal of this campaign.

Santa Brígida caught the Lanzarote defence off guard in the opening seconds of the first half. A deep cross found striker Suso and he blasted from close range but Rojillos keeper Ruyman pulled off an outstanding save to preserve his sides lead in those precious opening moments of the second period.

Miguel Gómez has the ability to change any game in an instant and in the 51st minute he controlled the ball with his chest then struck on the half volley from over 30 yards with pace and swerve but the keeper did equally as good managing to get his fingertips on the ball to only concede a corner.

The Rojillos were defending well and were looking to hit on the break. In the 74th minute a wonderful first time ball from Alyson released sub Juanito through the centre. The 26 year old striker maintained his composure and struck powerful and low beating the keeper and giving Lanzarote a 0-2 lead.

Lanzarote had to dig in deeper from the 77th minute as midfielder Thioub was issued his second yellow card and the Rojillos were forced to play on with ten men.

Deep into added on time the home side were awarded a penalty. Ruyman was determined to keep a clean sheet and saved superbly low to his right but the rebound fell straight back to the penalty taker who stroked it home.

It was all too late from the home side as the referee blew immediately for full time at the restart and Lanzarote could celebrate claiming their first away win of the season.

Both clubs showed their support to their fellow Canarian island of La Palma by uniting in the pre match photo. The online raffle ticket sales for a UD Villa Santa Brígida and Lanzarote shirt along with gate sales raised 2500 Euros for our cousins in La Palma.

Next Sunday 3rd October at home 12 noon the Rojillos have the opportunity to make it a hat trick of wins when they play 10th placed side CD Santa Úrsula. The club urges its fans to buy tickets from the club in Arrecife during the week to avoid queues on the day (take ID with you and to the match).
