NEW SIGNING AND AGAIN NO FANS THIS SUNDAY

The club has just signed 32 year old right back Oriol Dot Codina to replace Kevin Castro who has had to leave the club to pursue work commitments.

Oriol is from Barcelona and has plenty of experience at this level and the league above. He is predominantly a right back though can switch flanks and is noted for his pace. He will arrive in the island today and the club is trying to complete all relevant paperwork so he will be available for Sunday’s home match.

Once again UD Lanzarote remains the only club in the Canarian Third Division who have not had fans permitted to watch their team play thanks to the President of our local government.

It may be easy for people outside the island to understand the reason for banning the public to sporting events but for the majority of us living on the island, we are baffled.

Lanzarote has the least percentage of Covid infections in the Canary Islands with just three people in hospital; the stadium is the biggest in the third division with a capacity of 6000 making it simple to distance 300 people. On top of that the Canarian Health authorities have given their blessing for fans to attend.

Meanwhile next door to the stadium the theatre is open and hundreds visit the gym across the road using the various fitness machines making this far more dangerous than an outdoor stadium.

We are forced to abide by this ladies decision as do parents of all junior clubs and lower league teams. You do wonder how on earth she can feel this is safer for the public when parents drop off their children then all mingle together in nearby cafes waiting for the game to finish.

Parents and supporters in my local village in Tahiche have climbed up the side of the volcano to watch the match. Whilst we must all be careful and respect the dangers of Covid we must also not wrap ourselves up in cotton wool, we must and she must move us forward.

The only place in Tahiche to watch the match is from its volcano.

This Sundays match at 12 noon versus Fuerteventura side CD Uníon Puerto will once again be played behind closed doors. Unfortunately we are not sure if the match will be streamed because Lanzarote Deportiva who normally televise the match have other commitments. If we find an alternative way, we will post.
