LANZAROTE   1   C.D. VERA   1,   3rd November 2019,

The Rojillos frustration continues as they once again drop points at home after dominating and being denied by the woodwork on three occasions.

I have supported the Rojillos for 20 odd years and have seen them go through many ups and downs. Normally when it’s a down there are reasons, lack of morale, arguments within the camp or even a poor side.

There is none of this within the management or squad and its evident to see that the players are giving their all, hopefully over the course of the season things will even themselves out and they will starting getting the rub of the green.

Lanzarote began the match at an electric place. Two minutes hadn’t passed on the clock and striker Aday López superbly controlled a high ball bringing it immediately ready for a strike from eight yards. His effort was powerful and on target but incredibly the keepers reflexes were superb as he brushed the strike over the crossbar.

Seconds later and defender Omar saw his shot deflected onto the post and Nico González stabbed the ball home from the rebound but was wrongly adjudged offside.

The Rojillos persisted and were not to be denied. New striker Aday López latched onto a poor back pass and beat the keeper to the ball and then had the simple task of slotting the ball home for his first goal for Lanzarote but more importantly to give his new club a 1-0 lead.

The home side looked intent on creating more chances especially with wide men Alex Fuentes and Rami causing problems for the Tenerife defence.

Aday dedicating his goal to his lost friend Jacob who sadly passed away at just 28 years of age.

In the 13th minute the Tenerife keeper Falero twisted his knee unchallenged and play was held up for five minutes. Unfortunately this stoppage put a halt to Lanzarote´s intensity and it was the 8th placed side that began clawing its way into the game.

Falero the CD Vera keeper had to be carried off with a nasty knee injury.

In the 33rd minute in what can only be described as a strikers challenge from Aday who jumped in too quick and didn’t make contact with the ball resulting in the referee awarding a penalty to the visitors. Striker Jorge sent Ruyman the wrong way and the Tenerife side went into the interval with the score level at 1-1.

The Tenerife side level from a penalty

Eight minutes into the second half and Lanzarote had a good shout for a penalty when winger Rami beat a defender to the by line and looked as though he was tripped, however the Ref turned a blind eye to the appeals of the players and the crowd and allowed play to continue.

Another beautiful day in Arrecife.

Just before the hour mark the Lanzarote manager introduced Ayoze Pérez and Miguel Gómez and suddenly the Rojillos looked more spirited.

Miguel Gómez had a strike from 20 yards but the keeper saw it all the way and made a comfortable save. In the 78th minute the visitors had a golden opportunity to go in front.

The ball was threaded to striker Mesahack but from 12 yards and with just the keeper to beat made an awful mess of his effort firing way over the crossbar.

A minute later and a cross from Josito on the left found Ayoze Pérez and he guided his header from eight yards which beat the keeper but unfortunately it bounced off the right hand post and away to safety.

Ayoze Pérez striking the woodwork with this header.

Lanzarote gave all they had in the closing minutes, Ayoze had a good free kick from 25 yards well saved and deep into injury time a trademark Miguel Gómez free kick was whipped in from the right. The defender had to get something on it which saw the ball skim off his head and onto the inside of the post and away, then instantly the referee blew for full time.

So close to a injury time win.

The Lanzarote players fell to their knees in disbelief that they hadn’t ended their six match run without a win.

Despair at the final whistle.

The Rojillos slip to 13th spot and are seven points off the playoffs and three points from the drop zone. Next Sunday Lanzarote travel to La Palma to play 16th placed side CD Mensajero.
