CD UNIÓN SUR YAIZA 1 LANZAROTE 1
CD UNIÓN SUR YAIZA 1 LANZAROTE 1, 7th January 2018,
Two cracking goals in either half ended this match in stalemate however, with three of the four teams above Lanzarote in the league losing, the away point won now means that the Rojillos are just goal difference away from that all important last playoff position, fourth spot.
The conditions for this highly anticipated derby match were more suited to British weather with wind, rain and the odd spot of sun all making an appearance.
Even on a bad day the village of Yaiza known as the cleanest village in Spain has a wonderful view of Las Montañas del Fuego (The Fire Mountains) and it is always a joy to visit this piece of island paradise.
The game began with just a small breeze but shortly after kick off the wind kicked in and made it difficult for both sides to create any flow with the ball.
The first chance of the game fell to Lanzarote´s most enterprising player on the day Miguel Gómez. A cross whipped in from the left and the striker was just inches away from nodding the ball home from six yards.
Only a minute later and a delightful ball over the top splitting the defence from midfielder Borja allowed Miguel Gómez a crack at goal. Miguel is an incredibly versatile player having played in defence, midfield, winger and striker; he hit the ball cleanly first time from the edge of the left hand corner of the box but his powerful effort flew inches past the right hand post.
In the 21st minute Rosmen came close with a header but then the home side began to enjoy some good possession but couldn’t convert any of their crosses that they were firing in to the Rojillo danger zone.
Moments later and a corner for Yaiza was viscously whipped in, wind assisted and was well dealt with by the Rojillo keeper Alejandro as he punched away to safety.
In the 32nd minute Rami who began the season as a Lanzarote player and scored a great goal for the Rojillos early on in the season picked the ball up on the left hand corner of the box. Centre back Kamara had got himself in a good position tracking the winger but by the way the number 11 arched his body you could see he was aiming at the only possible route to goal and with a brilliant strike found that spot perfectly squeezing the ball into the top right hand corner giving Yaiza a 1-0 lead to take into the break.
Lanzarote came to life instantly in the second half with Borja just heading over in the first minute.
A couple of minutes later an intelligent lay off from Borja fell to Miguel Gómez, not many players would try this as it can go terribly wrong but from 20 yards he hit across the ball and his swerving drive forced the Yaiza keeper Rúyman into an excellent save as the ball was destined for the top left hand corner.
The pressure from the Rojillos finally paid its dividends in the 64th minute. Yaiza´s defence only cleared the ball to the edge of the penalty area, Kamara came steaming in and connected with his right foot and sent the ball whistling into the bottom left hand corner to level at 1-1. The defender scored for his second successive week and also scored in this fixture last season but back then it was for the green and white of Yaiza.
Both sides had a chance to win the game late on. In the 89th minute Rosmen shot powerfully on the turn from 10 yards but his excellent strike was matched equally by the Yaiza keeper and deep into stoppage time defender Fran Gil went wide of the target from eight yards for the home side.
I doubt anybody from either team would disagree that a draw was a fair result.
All the top four teams have had a stint as league leaders with CD Tenerife B being the latest side to do so following their 0-2 away win over the weekend. Lanzarote trail the new league leaders by seven points and Yaiza move up one place to ninth.
Next Sunday 14th January at 12 noon Lanzarote are at home to 8th placed Gran Canarian side UD Villa Santa Brígida.
