LANZAROTE 3 CD MENSAJERO 2

LANZAROTE   3   CD MENSAJERO   2

26th October 2014

Unión Deportiva Lanzarote made it five home wins out of their five matches played in a pulsating match which was played in intense heat.

The La Palma side started the game the much better of the two sides and had Lanzarote chasing shadows for the first ten minutes.

It didn’t take long for the Rojillos to regain possession and begin taking the game to the visitors. In the 13th minute Rosmen stole the ball on the edge of the area and found Toñito at the far post, the winger made no mistake blasting the ball home to put his side 1-0 up.

The match was being played with such a great pace you had to wonder when it would drop as the temperature was pushing 30 degrees. In the 21st minute Mensajero won a free kick on the edge of the Lanzarote box in the centre as they had done a couple of minutes earlier, in their previous attempt the ball was struck into the wall but on this occasion midfielder Iray found the tiniest of gaps as the ball flew high into the Lanzarote´s goalkeeper right hand post giving the Rojillos number one stopper Agoney no chance at all with an absolute beauty.

The game was only at 1-1 for six minutes as the home side responded superbly. Veteran Ángel Gil delivered a great whipped in cross from the right and Lanzarote´s top marksman Rosmen headed his side 2-1 up with a stunning header from eight yards.

Both teams had the opportunity to score as the half came to a close. Rosmen saw another header go inches wide of the post and the La Palma side saw a wonder effort from midfielder Rayco thunder off the bar. All looked good for Lanzarote as they headed into the break with a 2-1 advantage.

Only seven minutes into the second half and Lanzarote´s fortune was going to change by a ridiculous yellow card given by the Ref to Lanzarote midfielder Falo. The poor lad had a pile driver shot drilled at him and from one metre and it was impossible for him to get his hand out of the way. Earlier in the match the official gave him a yellow for even a lesser offence so he was off and the Rojillos were forced to play with ten men as the heat intensified.

This decision left manager Adolfo Pérez to change his game plan to a more defensive minded set up. Midfielder Kilian replaced an unhappy Toñito and Lanzarote defended.

The La Palma side were torturing Lanzarote spreading the ball from one side of the pitch to the other and slowly tiring their opponents into submission. A goal was imminent and in the 69th minute with the visitors just playing with three defenders it was their other one Fede that was sent forward who fired the ball in to level the score at 2-2.

Again Lanzarote defended with a super determination as the visitors really began to turn the screw. A header flew off the post and Lanzarote scrambled the ball away on several occasions but in the 78th minutes justice was served.

Lanzarote broke with Rosmen whose rapid pass found sub Echedey, his fresh feet fed the ball to the British boy Louis Kennedy who took the ball wide of the keeper then gently passed the ball into the empty net and incredibly making it 3-2 to his side. The winger then raced to the stand where he was greeted by a jubilant crowd. Kennedy up until then had been having a superb game along with all of his team mates but by doing this he must be awarded man of the match.

The La Palma team were deflated and Lanzarote managed to hold out for the remainder of the match to record their fifth straight home win on the bounce.

There is no doubt that this team has a buzz around it, many fans this season have commented about how hard they work for each other and refuse to give up. Anyone who has bought a season ticket and seen the opening five matches has already received their 50 Euros worth of entertainment. What good value it’s proved to be.

Lanzarote move up to the last playoff spot in fourth place and should they win their game in hand will go top.

Next weekend Lanzarote will travel to Tenerife determined to improve on their awful away form. They have a great opportunity for their first away win of the season as they face third from bottom side CD Vera.
