THE LEAD UP TO SATURDAYS DERBY MATCH IN YAIZA
The island’s biggest derby match between U.S. Yaiza v U.D. Lanzarote is in Yaiza this Saturday 5th March at 5.30pm.
Yaiza are by far in pole position sitting in the final playoff spot (5th) and are 3 points ahead of their rivals with the comfort of having two games in hand.
Yaiza recently went on a run of winning 5 consecutive matches catapulting them from third from bottom to third from top however in their last two matches they have been defeated.
The Rojillos season has been one of inconsistency. Whilst they are only 3 points from the playoffs they are way down the table in 10th spot and worryingly only 4 points off the relegation positions.
This season has been one of the most competitive that the league has ever seen and at this moment there are just 6 points separating fourth from bottom to that final playoff spot. Realistically there are 10 teams fighting for that fifth and final playoff position as well as around 10 teams fighting to avoid the drop.
Lanzarote will be delighted to see the return to their squad of their incredibly talented 19 year old Brazilian striker Alyson. The only other injury concerns are Thioub (4 weeks) and Rodrigo (2 weeks).
The Rojillos have 10 games remaining so must begin to hit good form now. The pain of that 0-1 home defeat to Yaiza in their worst performance of the season is still fresh in the minds from last October. Saturday would be the ideal time to begin to stake their claim to be serious playoff contenders. It promises to be a cracker!
