With how these playoffs are structured both sides have little chance on progressing to the next round even before a ball was kicked on Saturday. The two teams with the highest percentage after the six matches will move onto the next stage and the other four sides will remain in the the Tercera Division (Fourth Tier) for the forthcoming season.
Lanzarote were much more positive than their Tenerife rivals in the first half but were just unable to find the breakthrough. The best opportunity came in the 20th minute when the Santa Úrsula keeper produced a fine save from Rodrigo.
The Rojillos still had the upper hand in the second period and came close from a corner kick when Josua narrowly headed over the crossbar.
Shortly after this Rosmen headed against the crossbar and first to react was Rojillos striker Giovanni, with the ball up in the air the Lanzarote striker placed himself just before the goal line and jumped to protect the ball and to simply nod home.
In full view of the referee a Tenerife defender blatantly shoved Giovanni into the net and cleared the ball. The Lanzarote players were in shock that the official waived away claims for one of the most obvious penalties that you are likely to see. The only action the referee took on this piece of play was to give the Rojillos two yellow cards for protesting.
A few minutes later the home side capitalised on their good fortune when defender Miguel Ángel headed in a corner to give his side a 1-0 lead.
With very little left to play for credit must be given to UD Lanzarote as they kept up the battle and received their just rewards when their Captain Rosmen headed home in the 91st minute to earn his side a draw.
I am sure mathematically that there is a chance of still finishing in the top two however that would require a mini miracle. What Lanzarote have proved over this season is that they will battle to the end; this draw just cements that message that this will be the case until the official blows the full time whistle in their last game away on the 6th June.
Next Sunday at 12 noon Lanzarote are at home versus CD Tenerife B. There is absolutely no doubt that Tenerife will be looking for the win as they are just behind the top two teams in third position. Plenty of tickets will be available (10 Euros or 6 Euros for members) from Davinia at the club (Take your Nie and ID, also to the match) from Wednesday and Thursday 8am to 12 then again at 6pm – 8pm. Friday morning from 8am to 12 is also possible. No tickets will be sold on match day.
