UNIÓN VIERA 3 LANZAROTE 2

UNIÓN VIERA   3   LANZAROTE   2

After only 22 minutes Lanzarote found themselves 3-0 down and a mountain to climb. Sub Miguel Yunes fought back with two second half goals but the Rojillos return from Gran Canaria with nothing to show for their efforts.

Lanzarote began the game well with some crisp passing but all was undone in the sixth minute with a solo effort from midfielder Borja which gave the home side a 1-0 lead. Shortly after Alex Yunes had a wonderful chance to level the scores with a one on one with the Gran Canarian keeper but he failed to hit the target.

Lanzarote were made to pay for this in the 20th minute when winger Néstor put the home side 2-0 up and then two minutes later striker Chema took full advantage of his side’s third chance in the match by bagging the third. Debutant Lanzarote keeper found himself picking the ball out of the net three times with still three quarters of the match left to play. His name must describe how he was feeling Señor Agoney.

Things could have got worse as the home side had a goal disallowed for a disputed offside decision just before the interval.

Lanzarote came out for the second period determined to regain some pride though it wasn’t until 16 minutes from time when sub Miguel Yunes reduced the deficit to 1-3. The same player then scored in the 90th minute to make it an exciting finale with the score poised at 2-3. The Rojillos had a couple of opportunities to level the match in injury time but fell short.

Morale will be low especially with the departure of one of Lanzarote´s great players Oscar Vladimir. The central midfielder who was the scorer of Lanzarote´s goal against the Mighty Real Madrid in the Copa Del Rey was dismissed by the club for creating malcontent within the squad, whatever that means. It is a sad way for Vladi to leave but for those of us who saw him play in his prime during those fantastic cup years will eternally be grateful.

Lanzarote´s next home game against sixth placed side SD Tenisca has been brought forward and will be played this Saturday 13th Oct at 4pm.
