COPA DEL REY AWAITS LANZAROTE

The draw for the Copa Del Rey will take place on October 10th with UD Lanzarote guaranteed a home tie versus a Primera or Segunda A side that will be played between 29, 30 or the 31st October.

Unlike English football where every club is involved in the F.A. Cup, in Spain it is necessary for the lower league clubs to qualify to compete in the Copa Del Rey by either winning their league, highest place finish or entrance through the Confederation cup. None of those ways happens often, so for many locals and Lanzarote residents will be glued to their television sets with huge anticipation on October 10th at 12 noon.

The Rojillos have had a love affair with the Copa Del Rey beating Primera Liga sides Athletic Bilbao, CD Tenerife and Mallorca and narrowly losing to both Real and Atlético Madrid not to mention beating several Segunda A (second tier) sides.

Absent from the first round draw will be teams involved in the Spanish Super Cup and that includes Real Madrid, Barcelona, Athletic Bilbao and Mallorca. Deportiva La Coruña is also exempt after winning the RFEF 1 (Third Tier). Other than those teams Lanzarote will be playing one of the sides from Spain’s Golden or Silver leagues.

The only downside is that Lanzarote are currently playing their home matches in Tías whilst restoration work is carried out in Ciudad Deportiva in Arrecife and the capacity in Tías is a fraction of our home stadium.

The club will have to wait to see who their opponents will be on October 10th and then decide price and availability of match tickets. Priority I am sure will be given to Goldcard members and season ticket holders.

Season tickets are still available at 75 Euros adults and 50 Euros pensioners. Only two home league matches have been played with the third this Sunday 6th October in Tías at 12 noon versus UD Las Palmas B. Season tickets are available at the shop in Costa Teguise at CC Nautical, Local 25 Monday to Friday 10am to 1pm and also Wednesday evenings 5-7pm.
