LANZAROTE WIN THE SAN BARTOLOMÉ TOURNAMENT

The Rojillos won the final of the San Bartolomé tournament (3-1) on penalties after the match finished 2-2 at full time.

It is still very early on in preseason considering the league campaign begins at home on September 10th but if anyone thought that both teams would not be competitive that theory went out the window in the first minute. A crunching challenge from Rojillos captain Raúl deservedly earned him a yellow card and shortly after a late lunge on the Yaiza keeper from Lanzarote striker Di Renzo was also a yellow card but the referee could have easily shown him red.

Yaiza benefited from some poor defending by the Rojillos as Yaiza stole the ball in the heart of the defence. The Yaiza striker coolly skipped around the Lanzarote keeper Alejandro and slotted the ball home to go his side an early 1-0 lead. Di Renzo came close to levelling in the 12th minute but his header lacked a little power to beat the Yaiza keeper.

In the 20th minute a great jinking run from the impressive Adrían Machín ended with him being brought down in the penalty area and the official didn’t hesitate pointing for a penalty kick. The Yaiza keeper guessed the right way but Traoré´s accuracy and power burying the ball into the bottom left hand corner levelled the score at one apiece.

The officials had to talk to both teams as the game threatened to boil over with over competitive challenges and on the stroke of halftime both sides including both benches were involved in a minor scuffle but thankfully it all ended peacefully.

Early in the second half Di Renzo was denied by the feet of the Yaiza keeper but less than a minute later Lanzarote´s number 9 Di Renzo stole the ball from a defender, chipped and went round the keeper before blasting home and giving Lanzarote a 2-1 advantage.

Lanzarote had some good chances to open up a two goal lead especially when Di Renzo climbed so high from a delightful cross from Guize and headed the ball across the goal only to see it hit the crossbar and away to safety. Less than a minute later and Di Renzo again won the ball and set up a tap in for the Rojillos number 22 but unfortunately he got underneath the ball as it cleared the bar and the netting behind the goal.

In the 67th minute Yaiza winger Roy squeezed in-between the two Lanzarote centre backs and poked a shot past keeper Alejandro but his strike hit the post and returned to him, his second effort was saved then the ball hit the post again but he made no mistake on his third attempt and made the score 2-2.

Both sides had opportunities to win the match but a combination of good goalkeeping and some rusty finishing and the match ended 2-2 and had to be decided on penalties.

Yaiza missed their opening three spot kicks whilst Lanzarote went 2-0 up. Yaiza finally scored on their fourth attempt but on the next penalty Lanzarote converted and won the tournament 3-1 on penalties.

Ayoze Pérez receives the San Bartolomé cup.

Next week the Tinajo tournament will begin and Lanzarote´s first match is versus San Bartolomé CF on Friday 11th August at 8.30pm. Should Lanzarote win that match they will play in the final on Saturday 12th at 9pm but should they lose they will play in the third place final at 6pm the same evening.
