LANZAROTE   3   CD TENERIFE B   0,   17th February 2019,

The Rojillos are now just goal difference away from a playoff finish following this convincing win against the B side of Tenerife.

The weekend began well for the Rojillos when league leaders UD Tamaraceite lost 2-1 on the Saturday then on Sunday it was a dream come true as the second, third and fourth placed sides all lost meaning it is just goal difference that now separates Lanzarote from the final playoff position, fourth spot.

It’s always difficult to work out crowd figures at our matches due to the fact that 18´s and under are admitted free of charge and nobody is counting how many season ticket holders there are. Today we estimate there was around 800 souls basking in the glorious winter sunshine.

It’s great to see so many old and new faces at the games and at this match Club Las Calas complex in Puerto Del Carmen led by Bob Campbell and his merry followers set a new record with 44 hopping on the bus lending their support to the Rojillo cause. The players and management are so thankful of this terrific support to all and every one of you.

Lanzarote´s new signing centre back Luciano Pierce was tremendous in his opening two games and five minutes into this match it got even better for the 21 year old when he nodded home a free kick from Ayoze Pérez to send his side 1-0 up.

A magnificent start for new boy Luciano Pierce.

It was really an explosive first half with both sides playing entertaining attacking football. In the 9th minute the hard working Nico González expertly weighted a through ball that sent Alex Cruz through on goal though from a narrow angle he attempted to squeeze the ball through the keeper’s legs but the goalkeeper had read the script and blocked his effort.

In the 15th minute Rojillos keeper Alejandro pulled off a great save from close range and following several shots that were blocked by a desperate defence the ball was finally cleared to safety.

Five minutes later and Nico González was inches away of doubling the lead when he saw his shot from 15 yards agonizingly flew past the far left hand post.

Another terrific match from Nico González

The ball was going from one end to the other in a matter of seconds with both sides playing their part in a wonderful first half.

In the 26th minute the Chicharreros (Tenerifians) were so unlucky not to level the score. Some good work down the left flank led to the ball being squared to midfielder Elliot, he cut inside his defender and from ten yards unleashed a powerful drive which blasted off the underside of the bar and away to safety.

Two minutes later and some wonderful footwork from Nico González and with a pass to match set Rosmen free on goal. The usually reliable Lanzarote captain will not want to see a replay of his strike as it threatened the corner flag more than the back of the net.

The boys from the bar impressed with the bar takings.

Nevertheless the Rojillos constant pressure paid dividends on the half hour. A delicious cross from the right by Ayoze Pérez found winger Alex Cruz on the far post and his diving header into the left hand corner gave Lanzarote breathing space with a 2-0 lead.

For the final 15 minutes of the first period the intensity of the match remained the same but opportunities on goal were rare.

Rojillos manager Maxi Barrera ordered his defence to shut up shop for the second half and with a back four who haven’t conceded in their last three matches it was always going to be a difficult task for the mid table side to claw themselves back into the match.

The visitors did have a couple of half chances midway through the second period but the Rojillos never really felt threatened and remained in control of the match.

In the 82nd minute the dynamic Nico González crossed to the far post from the right, Ayoze Pérez kept his eye on the ball from the moment it left Nico´s foot and he arched his body then patiently struck the ball quite brilliantly on the volley from ten yards sending a missile into the roof of the net to wrap up the match for a convincing 3-0 win.

Lanzarote have another important yet difficult away match next Saturday in Tenerife at 4.30pm versus CD Santa Úrsula. The third placed side are just two points ahead of fifth place Lanzarote so a win for the Rojillos will see them in the playoff positions.
