CD BUZANADA 1 LANZAROTE 2, 14th March 2018,

CD BUZANADA   1   LANZAROTE   2,   14th March 2018,

The Rojillos form of late has been nothing short of spectacular. Four wins on the bounce sees Lanzarote move into the playoff positions for the opportunity at Segunda B (League 1) football.

Only a few weeks ago many fans travelled with the club to Fuerteventura only to see their team lose 2-0 to relegation threatened CD Unión Puerto in an almighty poor display. There was absolutely not a sign that things would dramatically take a turn for the better.

Beating two teams that were above them in the league has instilled a confidence and camaraderie within the club that has come at the perfect time as we enter the final quarter of the season.

The Rojillos are on a roll.

Lanzarote dominated the first half of this match and took the lead with Alex Cruz supplying Javi Betancort who nodded home in the 11th minute to put his side 1-0 up. The visitors had other opportunities to extend their lead but the Tenerife side made it to half time with the match still in the balance.

A much improved display in the second half from the hosts saw them earn and convert a disputed penalty in the 70th minute to level at one apiece.

With ten minutes remaining playmaker Enrique Castaño threaded through a perfect pass for Miguel Gómez  (inset photo) and his powerful strike flew past the keeper to restore the lead with a 1-2 advantage.

Rojillos manager Maxi Barrera had been criticized from some supporters for rotating his squad but he now has a team that is bang on form going into the last ten matches of the season with every member of that squad fit, ready and capable to put on that Rojillo jersey.

Lanzarote manager Maxi Barrera getting it right.

For the closing ten minutes the Lanzarote defence didn’t allow the 13th placed side a look in at goal and cruised into the final playoff position fourth spot with ease.

CD Mensajero are level on points with Lanzarote and even though they have a slightly better goal difference than the Rojillos they have slipped to fifth. In Spanish football if both sides are level on points it goes down to how they did against each other. In this case Lanzarote drew at home 1-1 but won the away fixture 1-3 so claim the advantage.

This Saturday 17th March at 6pm the Rojillos have a wonderful opportunity to push for a higher league position when they take on at home second from bottom side UD Los Llanos. This may look a home banker but as we all know football can have a way of surprising us,  so all support for our island side to help take our team for a chance of playing in Segunda B (League 1) is more than welcome.
