LANZAROTE 2 VILLA SANTA BRÍGIDA 2
LANZAROTE 2 VILLA SANTA BRÍGIDA 2,
6th September 2015
Last season this game ended in a spectacular 4-4 draw and from the opening minute it looked as though we were in for another wonder match. The first half was superb but with the temperature in the 30´s the game inevitably slowed but was still highly competitive till the end.
The Gran Canarian outfit who were for many years a regular in Segunda B (League 1) alongside Lanzarote were paying absolutely no respect for Lanzarote´s 22 match unbeaten home run and were threatening on the counter attack.
In the 11th min striker Santi broke through the centre of the Rojillo defence and it was a race between the striker and the Lanzarote keeper Agoney to who would get their first. There was contact, absolutely no doubt about that but Lanzarote did argue that Agoney did touch the ball. The end result was a penalty for the visitors but just a yellow card for Agoney. Nobody argued from either side but had this been a poorer Ref it could have been a sending off the Lanzarote keeper. Great decision Ref.
Defender Carreño fired with precision to give his side the early 0-1 advantage. This goal sparked Lanzarote into action and produced a first half which easily matched last season’s incredible game. Marcos Cabrera, Vladi and Brad began to stamp their authority in midfield whilst Rosmen showed what a great target man he is and for a big lad he is wonderful with his control and has unexpected quick feet.
In the 19th minute Toñito had a good effort blocked but just three minutes later Lanzarote were level. A free kick from the right was whipped in by Marcos Cabrera and British boy Kennedy from eight yards shaped his body and side footed the ball using the pace of the cross which left the keeper with no hope as the ball flew into the top corner. It was made to look easy but this was a well executed finish to make the score 1-1.
It was now end to end stuff in roasting hot conditions. There were water bottles on the sidelines for both sides nevertheless one has to take your hat off to all of the players to produce a spectacle in such conditions.
In the 37th minute Marcos Cabrera and Mauri created problems for the Gran Canarian defence which forced a hand ball and the Rojillos were awarded a penalty. Captain Rosmen fired home and Lanzarote were 2-1 up.
Both sides had opportunities to score before the break but they all went in for a cold shower with the home side having a narrow 2-1 lead.
Only four minutes into the second half and Santa Brígida were level. Winger Alvaro cut in from the left and released a thunderbolt of a shot which produced a brilliant one handed save from Agoney, the visitors were quick to pick up the pieces to feed striker Trujillo and from the edge of the box he sent in another bullet which gave the Lanzarote keeper no chance and levelled the score at two apiece.
The game was still fierce but it did lack the intensity of the first half. Late on Lanzarote gave one final push but the visitors defended well and were once again very much worthy of a point.
The league is still in its infancy though you would think both these sides will be fighting for a top four spot come May. Lanzarote slip to second with seven points and have been overtaken by Las Palmas B who are the only side with a 100% record after the three games.
Any side ahead of Las Palmas B at the end of the season should be Champions. Several of their players are understudies for players in the first team who play in La Liga so you would expect some class.
Next week Lanzarote are away to mid table Gran Canarian side UD San Fernando. The match will be played in Gran Canaria on the Saturday at 3.45pm. Next home game will be on the weekend of 19/20th September versus Arucas CF with a definite time and day to be confirmed nearer to the match.
