LANZAROTE 2 U.D. TELDE 1
LANZAROTE 2 U.D. TELDE 1
2nd February 2014
The Rojillos third home win on the bounce sees them flying clear of the relegation zone by 12 points with goals from midfielders Echedey and Marcos Cabrera.
U.D. Telde are in a relegation battle and began the match four points from the drop zone and were desperate to take something home to Gran Canaria with them. Surprisingly they began the match well, testing the Lanzarote keeper, Agoney on a couple of occasions and were not shy to bring men forward.
Gradually Lanzarote came into the game with midfielders Jotha and Marcos Cabrera dominating midfield. Nevertheless the Rojillos had to be patient as Telde got men behind the ball when they lost possession.
Some wonderful passing from Jotha sent winger Toñito on his way down the right flank as he was on one of his good days and constantly terrorized the visitors defence.
Lanzarote began to get a hold of the match and their patience was rewarded a few minutes before half time. Echedey made a great run through the middle and beat the offside; the midfielder kept his nerve and chipped the ball over the oncoming keeper to give his side a deserved 1-0 lead at the break.
The second half proved to be much more exciting. The visitors worked hard to get back into the match as the Rojillos retreated and began to look nervous. It wasn’t a big shock that the Gran Canarian side levelled on the hour with midfielder José Manuel let fire after a good run to bring his side back into the match.
This is what Lanzarote needed to get them fired up and thankfully they still had half an hour to do so. Echedey again came close brushing the post after shooting across goal from 15 yards. Marcos Cabrera then saw his brilliant dipping free kick rebound off the crossbar as the Rojillos mounted the pressure.
The winner arrived in the 82nd minute, Toñito hit the by-line after beating two defenders and pulled the ball back perfectly to Marcos Cabrera, the midfielders shot was well saved but the rebound rolled back to him and he made no mistake second time around thumping the ball home to regain the lead for his side at 2-1.
Lanzarote saw out the remaining minutes with a well organised defence that didn’t give the visitors a look in and comfortably took all three points to remain in 11th spot.
It does look as though the next home match will be back in Arrecife as the surface has been laid and the new seating in the stadium is completed. Before that Lanzarote play away next Sunday versus CF Estrella. The Gran Canarian side are in 8th position and in their last six home matches have won five and drawn the other whilst Lanzarote´s away form is nothing short of horrific with just one point taken in eight attempts. With nothing to lose could this be the week the Rojillos win away?
