On the eve of Los Reyes Magos ( The 3 Kings, Spanish Xmas eve) Lanzarote dominated the match against the third from bottom Tenerife side UD Realejos but as for most of this season failed to make the game secure and were left with a few nervous moments in the final stages.
On a glorious Sunday afternoon with just the odd scattered cloud and temperatures around 24 degrees at the midday kick off the Rojillos made a positive start to the year.
After last week’s shambles the Rojillos were intent on getting off to a good start. British boy Louis Kennedy seemed to be involved with everything in the opening stages and delighted the crowd with a string of neat touches and creating many opportunities down the left wing.
The problem this season is putting the ball into the net, last season Lanzarote were free scoring but this campaign there is only one side who have scored less and that is bottom side CD San Isidro. In the 20 matches played up to date the Rojillos have only found the back of the net on 17 occasions.
From the first minute of this match Lanzarote looked destined to score a bagful. Defender Fran Gil came close with a header and strike partners Yaco and his brother Rosmen were also guilty of missed chances. Rosmen had a great strike from 20 yards which hit the underside of the crossbar and looked to have crossed the line but the official could not be certain and correctly did not award a goal.
The visitors offered very little in the first half but as soon as they had the ball they broke quick looking to catch the home side on the break, this made it an open and very entertaining first half.
The break though finally came and into couldn’t have been closer to half time. A corner was whipped in from the left by the inspirational Lanzarote captain Jotha and the ball fell invitingly for Centre back Adrían Martín who fired the ball home from six yards to send his side 1-0 up. The Ref didn’t even allow the visitors time for kick off as he blew immediately for the break.
Once again Lanzarote came out for the second period to try and kill off the game early. After just two minutes Kennedy was put through with just the keeper to beat, the 20 year old chipped the ball over but the keeper read his intentions and saved well.
This second goal would just not come despite the relentless pressure. Rosmen had two fantastic opportunities, firstly rounding the keeper and shooting only to see a defender rescue his side by kicking off the goal line, then with just the keeper to beat Lanzarote´s top striker lack of confidence showed as he couldn’t finish with just the keeper to beat.
The last few minutes and the Tenerife side pushed more men forward in a last attempt to grab a point. The Rojillos defended well and the visitors only looked dangerous on set pieces.
The three points move Lanzarote up to 11th spot and nine points from the play offs but they have stretched the distance from relegation to 12 points. Next week Lanzarote travel to Tenerife to face 4th from bottom side CD Laguna who are on a decent run just losing once in their last five outings.
