The Rojillos are one of only three teams who still have maximum points after their two games played following a first half converted penalty by Captain Jotha.
The support for the team was great considering that Real Madrid´s match with Athletic Bilbao kicked off at 11am to capture the huge market of an Asian audience so they would be watching the game in the evening. Also a few of the Costa Teguise West Brom supporters decided to watch their home defeat to Swansea as well as many Man U and Liverpool fans deciding to watch their sides kick off at 1.30pm.
Nevertheless there were around 400 or so hearty Rojillo fans under the lovely cover of the Tias stadium roof on a beautiful sunny day. The stadium itself is ideal and the facilities are great so I am sure the players and fans will enjoy themselves here over the next few games whilst the Arrecife home pitch gets re-laid.
The game began with the Rojillos laying siege to their Tenerife opponents. Inside three minutes and winger Toñito fed debutant David Machín inside the area but unfortunately his effort fell straight into the keeper’s hands.
Strikes from Yaco and Raúl Fernández came close but in the 16th minute a blatant foul on Toñito on the edge of the box gave the Conejeros (locals) a penalty. Jotha confidently stepped up and sent the keeper the wrong way to give his side a 1-0 advantage.
Lanzarote went in search of the second goal and a good volley from Yaco on the edge of the area was well saved by the Tenerife keeper Dani.
The Tenerife side who had a terrific 2-1 win last week against one of this seasons favourites Vecindario from Gran Canaria had their only strike on goal in the 35th minute. Midfielder Adrían hit the ball like a rocket from 20 yards but the Lanzarote keeper, Agoney kept his eyes on the swerving ball and did well to fist the ball away to safety. Lanzarote went into the break with their narrow advantage.
The visitors came out for the second half with a much better attitude. They passed the ball around well and dominated possession for the opening 15 minutes but still created very little.
Lanzarote´s defence last season conceded a goal in the opening couple of minutes on all of their first four home matches. This season it looks much more organised and in most cases dealt with attacks during this brief spell swiftly.
Midway through the second half and the Rojillos regained possession and looked the more threatening of the two sides. The final five minutes was a nervous time for the local fans as the Tenerife outfit went all out looking for that goal to earn them a point by sending in a series of crosses into the Lanzarote box.
The Rojillos withstood their late flurry and were worthy 1-0 winners. Next week Lanzarote travel to Gran Canaria and face bottom club Raquí San Isidro. The bad news is that Lanzarote have only taken two points against our Canarian neighbours on their patch in their last five outings.
The next home match has been CHANGED. Lanzarote will play SD Tenisca on Saturday 14th September at 1pm. The reason for the change of date is because Lanzarote has its biggest fiesta of the year on the Sunday in “Los Dolores,” where about a third of all islanders dress up in their Canarian outfits and walk while drinking plenty of Ron Arehucas on the pilgrimage to Tinajo where they pay homage to “Our Lady of Sorrows” who protected us against the volcanic lava flow just under 300 years ago.
