LANZAROTE   3   CD TENERIFE B   3,

With the game poised at 1-2 in favour of the Tenerife side going into the 92nd minute who could have predicted three more goals, a sending off and a fracas involving the majority of both teams.

Ever since Lanzarote beat the then Primera Liga side Tenerife´s first team in the Copa Del Rey 5-1 around 11 years ago matches between these two sides have always been tasty affairs.

The match began at a good pace and whilst there was little sign of what was to come the football being played was entertaining. First to threaten was Tenerife striker Cristian who forced the Lanzarote keeper Agoney into an excellent save.

On the half hour another effort from Cristian trickled along the ground and it seemed an easy pick up for the Rojillo keeper. Incredibly the Lanzarote keeper got his bearings all wrong and thought that the ball was going wide for a goal kick so he decided to let it run out of play. The poor lad got an almighty shock when the ball hit the post and then rebounded off him but to Agoney´s relief the ball only went out for a corner kick. ( I have already done one or two Agoney jokes so that’s my lot)

A few minutes later and winger Toñito was clean through with just the Tenerife keeper to beat, he struck well but the keeper had come out and narrowed the angle but still produced a fine save.

The deadlock was broken a minute into added on time in the first half. Defender Franco shocked the Lanzarote defence as he cut inside from the left wing and once inside the area fired home giving Tenerife the 0-1 advantage to take into the break.

The Rojillos began the second half the stronger of the two teams and when midfielder Marcos Cabrera was introduced on his return to the club a little before the hour mark Lanzarote began to dominate the midfield.

Lanzarote were now pressing hard just leaving three in defence and finally levelled in the 73rd minute with captain Rosmen nodding home following a free kick.

With the game now poised at 1-1 Lanzarote were expected to go for the jugular but the youth of the Tenerife side were having none of it. The visitors moved up a gear. After a wonderful passage of play which included flicks and one two´s the ball was fired across the penalty box and midfielder Chirri poked the ball home from two yards and sent his side back in the lead at 1-2. Nine Pompey fans on holiday who had travelled up to watch the match from Puerto Calero assured me that the goal scorer was at least a yard and a half offside. After the amount of beer they had drunk I will stick with the linesman’s decision.

The Rojillos went out all guns blazing and in the second minute of injury time they got their just reward. Good work from sub Echedey from the edge of the area beating a couple of defenders and chipping the ball into the danger zone, Javi Betancort nodded the ball on and at the far post Captain Rosmen who had been outstanding all afternoon fired his and his teams second goal to even the score up at 2-2.

As Toñito was about to join his team mates in celebration Tenerife defender Jony lost his marbles and lashed out of the Lanzarote winger by kicking him. This resulted in a free-for-all. Infuriated, the Lanzarote players chased the Tenerife player three quarters the length of the pitch to make their feelings known to him.

The Rojillos should have just let the Ref do what he was paid to do and send the lad off but that is easier said than done in the heat of the moment. Jony eventually did receive his marching orders but a host of Lanzarote players ended up receiving a yellow card. A couple of the home fans stepped over the advertising boarding and towards the pitch to protest at the Ref. Fortunately they had a combined age of about 140 years and weighed about the same as a sack of spuds between them so offered no threat at all to the official.

The game finally got going again and only the Ref knew how much time was left to play. In the 96th  minute Lanzarote went into the lead (3-2) for the first time in the match, a deep cross from central defender Kamara found Javi Betancort and incredibly he fired home thinking he had got the winner and sent the home fans wild with joy.

Tenerife pushed all men forward and in the 99th minute were awarded a free kick a couple of yards outside the box. Striker Alexander shot low and somehow the ball went through the Lanzarote wall and beyond the Lanzarote keeper into the left hand corner and now it was Tenerife´s turn to dive on each other in celebration.

The Ref kept the whistle in his mouth as he blew to restart the match but even then Javi Betancort shot from the half way line but the Tenerife keeper was equal to his effort. Finally the Ref blew for full time as the players and fans began to come to terms with what just happened.

Great performances by Rosmen, Juancar, Kamara among many others will not console the Lanzarote team as if they don’t win at home they don’t earn a cent. On a positive note British lad Ryan Macphee delighted the home fans with an excellent first half performance flying down the left wing at an incredible pace causing havoc for the Tenerife right back.

Next week Lanzarote have a nightmare of a match as they travel to Gran Canaria to face league leaders Las Palmas B. Next home game is scheduled for Sunday 10th Feb against Fuerteventura side CD Corralejo.
