Considering neither side had anything to play for other than pride it was a competitive and entertaining match.

The Tenerife side played well especially in the first half and in the early stages of the second period but they were up against the Rojillos keeper Ruyman who was in inspired form determined to keep a clean sheet.

Before kickoff ex Rojillo and club legend Maciot Dévora presented centre back Raúl Fernández the “Nina Gil” player of the season trophy as voted for by the clubs fans.

Lanzarote took the lead in the 11th minute with striker Iván Hujo breaking through the middle and beating the keeper from the edge of the box. The centre forward was a constant threat the whole match after scoring his ninth goal of the season.

Most people in the stadium came to see the 38 year old captain Ayoze Pérez play his 402nd and final game for the Rojillos.

At halftime the club paid homage to the local legend presenting him a gold badge and gifts from the Trifulka supporters club.

Ayoze made a brief emotional speech thanking them for their support over the past 12 years.

Whilst Lanzarote hadn’t had time to relax at halftime the visitors looked refreshed and were denied on several occasions by a determined Lanzarote keeper.

In the 57th minute Ayoze Pérez’s number was called and his time wearing number 21 for the Rojillos officially came to an end.

With thanks to the officials a wonderful sporting gesture was made as both teams gave the Lanzarote captain a guard of honour as he left the pitch.

In the 78th minute Álvaro Iglesias gave his side breathing space by scoring to give Lanzarote a 2-0 lead and deep into added on time Nadjib added a third to complete the season with a 3-0 win.

Fixtures for next season are always released around late July from the Spanish football federation.

The La Palma team were dominated in the first half and went into the break 2-0 up.

Lanzarote pressured the home side in the second half and pulled a goal back to make it 2-1 with 20 minutes remaining.

The Rojillos fought till the end but just couldn’t find that second goal.

Next Sunday Lanzarote play their final match of the season at home versus CD Marino which is scheduled for 11am but please check.

With just two league games remaining Lanzarote trail the La Palma side by just a single point to that all important final playoff position of fifth spot.

It is quite simple; for Lanzarote to go into the final league game of the season at home on the 11^th May they must win tomorrow if they are to have their  destiny in their own hands.

Lanzarote´s form has improved with three wins in their last four matches but they know they will be up against a very good side and a hostile crowd.  The players are focused and motivated in what is the most important match of this season.

Lanzarote won the home match just before Christmas 2-0 with goals from Ale Fuentes and Iglesias.

Centre back Raúl Fernández is UD Lanzarote´s Player of the Season 2024/25 as voted for by the fans. The 30 year old centre back is one of the clubs four captains and leads by example. He is incredibly consistent and is always voted in the top five players each season but more than ever this season fans have acknowledged his desire and passion for the club with his no nonsense attitude.

UD Lanzarote President Juan Carlos Albuixech informed Raúl on Tuesday that he was voted player of the season and as expected he was honoured, though the only important matter on his mind is the crucial match this Sunday versus CD Mensajero and for his team to clinch the final playoff spot.

Raúl will have the honour of being presented the “Nina Gil” trophy on the pitch at the final home league game of the season versus CD Marino on May 11^th by UD Lanzarote legend Maciot Dévora.

Last seasons winner is this seasons runner up Adrián Machín.

UD Lanzarote´s second most voted player is last season’s winner Adrián Machín. Over the last season and a half his turnaround has been nothing short of incredible. The early part of last season he was rarely chosen in the starting line up but a change of manager at Christmas and the 25 year old winger finally believed in himself and his confidence went through the roof. This season, a year older and wiser he has brought consistency to his game and is a hugely important member of the squad.

Third place is a tie with Ale Fuentes and captain Ayoze Pérez. Winger Ale Fuentes has stamped his name in UD Lanzarote history after his remarkable hat trick in the Copa Del Rey against Segunda A (Championship) Real Racing Santander in an incredible performance. The 25 year old is a great weapon to have as he terrorises the opponents defence.

Also in third place is former winner and already a UD Lanzarote legend Captain Ayoze Pérez. I really have no other words to describe this fantastic man and player. In the Copa Del Rey match versus 8 point leaders of Spain´s second tier Racing Santander he owned the midfield as he has done in over 400 matches at this level.

Javi Martín takes fifth spot.

Midfield maestro Javi Martín is in fifth spot and is always a popular choice to fans that love the elegant side of the game. He is one of those players that always seem to have time on the ball and has the ability to ping a 40 yard pass to the toe of a winger. The 27 year old local lad came third last season but I am sure he will still be pleased to be in the top 5 players voted for by the fans.

The Rojillos are sitting in sixth spot, one position and three points adrift of CD Mensajero that are in the final playoff position of fifth. It is a mammoth task to ask but if Lanzarote were to win their three remaining matches, two of which are at home then they would qualify for the playoffs.

Lanzarote face 12^th placed side UD Villa Santa Brígida and whilst the Gran Canarian team have had a disappointing season for their standards they have improved in recent weeks and have only been beaten once in their last seven outings.

Playoff rivals CD Mensajero have a difficult away trip to mid table side Arucas CF on Saturday and will be desperate for maximum points to ease the pressure when they host Lanzarote in what could be the crunch match next week.

If Lanzarote were to finish the season level on points with Mensajero then Lanzarote would have the advantage as the Rojillos won 2-0 at home earlier in the season. In Spanish football it is the team that fared better against the other that takes priority. Goal difference only comes into play if the two matches finished equal.

THE NINA GIL PLAYER OF THE SEASON 2024/25 TROPHY

On entering the stadium this Sunday season ticket holders (abonos) and club members (socios) will have the opportunity to vote for their player of the season.

Club officials will ask those eligible to vote for their top three players with 3 points awarded for their first, two points for the second and one point for the their third best player. The player with the most points will be awarded the trophy at the final home league match of the season on the 11^th May. I will post more details regarding this later in the week.

The Rojillos dominated the match but it seemed like so many other games that they would not be rewarded.

A goal from striker Iván Hujo in the dying moments sees his side close the gap to three points from CD Mensajero who remain in the final playoff position of fifth spot.

CD Mensajero drew 1-1 with second placed San Fernando and fourth placed side UD Ibarra suffered a shock 4-1 defeat at the hands of San Bartolomé. Ibarra now only hold a one point lead over Mensajero and they have the most difficult finish to the season.

There is a break for this Sunday but Lanzarote’s next match is at home on Sunday 27th April at 12 noon versus UD Villa Santa Brígida. The venue is still unknown.

The Rojillos chances of qualifying for the playoffs are slim though still not impossible as they trail CD Mensajero in the final playoff position by five points with only four matches remaining.

Lanzarote´s next two matches are both at home starting this Thursday and to have any hope of ending the season on a high they must win both matches. CD Mensajero have a very difficult game this Thursday when they host UD San Fernando that are second and are chasing down three points to the stuttering league leaders UD Las Palmas Atl  for that only guaranteed promotion position.

On the 4^th May Lanzarote will travel to La Palma to play CD Mensajero. The Rojillos would of course need to win that match and should they finish level on points then Lanzarote would go above Mensajero into fifth not because of goal difference but because of how the teams faired against each other in the season. Lanzarote won the home fixture 2-0..

Javi Mayor scored his second goal in successive games just after the interval to give his side the advantage.

The second placed side only took five minutes to level matters and then scored the winner ten minutes from time.
