THE RESTRICTIONS AND CHANGES

Please remember that UD Lanzarote do not impose the restrictions however we must abide by them. Our local government has imposed the most stringent set of rules than any other of the Canarian Islands. The islands bloodline is tourism so it’s no wonder the authorities are paranoid about any outbreaks of Covid.

At this moment there are few cases on the island which is wonderful news especially as tourism is rapidly improving so therefore we are hopeful rules will be eased soon. Anyone attending a game must be there an hour before kickoff, wear a mask and each person must sit in their allocated seat which will be three seats apart from the next person (even if it is a family member). No food or drinks are allowed except water.

The Food Van is not operating so please bring water as well as sunscreen and a cap. The merchandise stall will not be there either however all merchandise is available from the stall at the Sunday Teguise market (9.30am to 2pm) and also the shop in Costa Teguise at CC Nautical, Local 25 (past Decades Bar and behind Café Bonjour). From now until mid September the shop is open Monday to Friday 10am to 7pm and Saturdays at 10am to 2pm. In mid September we will return to our normal hours Monday to Friday 10am to 2pm and also Wednesdays 5pm to 7pm.

It was with the family of Vladi that I had my first contact with UD Lanzarote. Around 22 years ago I was working as a tour guide on this beautiful island and on the north tour we had lunch at his parent’s restaurant Aviguey in the village where I also lived Punta Mujeres.

Manolo and Ita used to cook and at the end of the meal would also sing to the tourists whilst Oscar and his sister Monica helped waiting the tables. Oscar was only a youngster when we first met and was playing for the UD Lanzarote under 18 side.

Very quickly Oscar progressed to the first team and it was from that moment I became hooked as a Rojillo supporter. I asked him about buying a shirt and he told me that if the one he has were to rip then he hasn’t got another one to wear. Instantly my mind began racing on how I could get involved. It took many years but here I am working alongside the club for over 15 years.

Oscar’s career was on fire as UD Lanzarote got promoted to the Segunda B (Third Tier). I was in his parents bar when the draw for the Copa Del Rey was announced and there was a deafening silence when UD Lanzarote was mentioned but that broke into chaos when the commentator said that they were to face Giants Real Madrid.

After all the celebrations quietened down I spoke with Oscar and his family and said that my wife was pregnant, as we didn’t want to know the sex of our second child I said that If Oscar scores against Real Madrid and if my wife gives birth to a boy then as long as my wife agrees we will call the boy Oscar.

On the 28^th November 2001 the Galacticos arrived in Lanzarote along with Zidane, Figo and Guti to name just a few. Midway through the first half the Primera Liga side took the lead and an onslaught was expected, though in the 41^st minute a ball was headed onto the path of Vladi and as the Brazilian keeper César advanced to block a shot, the Punta Mujeres boy beautifully chipped the Brazilian international and Lanzarote were level 1-1 at the break.

Vladi whipped off his shirt Giggsy style and ran around the pitch not really knowing that he had cemented his name in local football history. Four months later my wife gave birth to a healthy boy and of course his name is Oscar, now 19.

Manolo leaves behind his four sons (one of which was an adopted Saharan child who lost his parents) and his daughter, the wonderful Monica. Manolo will now be re joining his beautiful wife Ita who tragically died 18 years ago.

Oscar now helps run the Palenke restaurant in Punta Mujeres so if you are up that way pop in and see him and enjoy a great meal.

I am sure that on behalf of all UD Lanzarote fans we send our deepest sympathies to Oscar and his family and friends.

Either Gran Canarian side UD San Fernando or La Palma outfit SD Tenisca will be joining the already promoted CD Mensajero and CF San Mateo in Spain’s Bronze league Segunda B (Third Tier).

It is such a hard match to call as UD San Fernando are playing at home and have been fairly consistent throughout the season and were also the beaten finalists last season. SD Tenisca on their day can beat anybody in this league and will have plenty of travelling fans supporting them in Maspalomas tomorrow (Sunday 27^th at 12 noon).

Both sides have at least one former Rojillo player each with Javi Navarro for UD San Fernando but probably the most notable player is the popular Lanzarote born player and former Rojillo centre back Fran Gil  representing the La Palma side.

This is a huge match for both clubs with players knowing that promotion to Segunda B will put them in the shop window with the more famous clubs in Spain.

The President Juan Carlos Albuixech and his board are preparing for 2021/22 season and are already working on finding a new coach for the season ahead.

The 52 year old ex Getafe manager has only had one term with the Rojillos and it was probably the most difficult season that the club has faced in its 50 year history.

The management of U.D. Lanzarote did not come to this decision lightly and took into account the off field problems the club had incurred this campaign, however after analyzing the season with Josu and the technical management of the club it was decided that Josu would not continue as head coach.

The club wishes to thank Josu for everything he has done for the club during his time in charge and wishes him well for the future.

The home side began the stronger knowing that a win would guarantee them that their season wouldn’t end on this day.

Congratulations to these four, Jacqui, Steve and Kevin and Jacci who have been to many away games. They had to watch this one on a hill.

Early on the referee ordered a spot kick to Tenerife but Rojillos keeper Ruyman saved the strike for his second successive penalty save to keep the score level.

In the 25^th minute the promotion chasing side took a 1-0 lead when Martinez tucked the ball home at the far post.

Lanzarote returned fire immediately with captain Rosmen playing in his final game struck a left foot shot but his effort hit the post and was cleared.

Lanzarote´s manager Josu Uribe must have inspired his players during his half time team talk as they came out and began to threaten the Tenerife goal.

Fans weren’t admitted to watch the match but supporters let the team know that they were there.

It was striker Giovanni early on who narrowly shot just wide of the goal and later on the two Miguel’s, Gopar and Gómez forced the Tenerife keeper into good saves to maintain his sides lead.

Unfortunately Lanzarote could not find a way through to end the season on a positive note as the B side of Tenerife kept their dreams alive of promotion.

Congratulations must go to Gran Canarian side PP. Pulido San Mateo who will join the already promoted side CD Mensajero in Segunda B next season (third tier) following their 1-2 away win against CD Atlético Paso.

There are still a host of teams that will battle to win that third and final promotion position and that will be decided over the coming weeks.

It will be with mixed emotions on how the management, players and supporters will review this season. The club has had to overcome many disadvantages and the general feeling will be one of relief that they will maintain their standing in this division.

Everyone involved in the club has remained positive and the understanding of the situation by the supporters has been incredible. One thing that is absolutely certain is that everyone is raring to go for the season ahead.

This day was little to do with a football match it was all about the veteran striker. Even before the match kicked off the soon to be 41 year old picked up the award for “Player of the Season” voted for by the fans.

His team mates wanted to send him off with a victory as Lanzarote began the match at a frantic pace. In the 5^th minute Brazilian Keita produced a magical bit of skill beating two defenders when boxed in at the corner flag. His perfectly weighted pass then found fellow countryman Rodrigo who blasted home from six yards to give his side the early 1-0 advantage.

Keita couldn’t put a foot wrong and by halftime he could have been given the man of the match award by the way he was playing. Winger Adrián Machín was also demonstrating moments of quality and at 22 years of age it was reassuring to see that type of quality coming through the club.

An outstanding performance for Keita who was voted Lanzarote´s 4th best player this season.

The Tenerife side had their moments in the first half and midway through they had a goal disallowed for a narrow offside decision. In the 40^th minute striker Semidan had a low strike saved well by keeper Ruyman but it was almost a fairytale ending to the first period when Rodrigo whipped in a cross and Rosmen rose majestically as he has done for just under a quarter of a century but his glancing header went inches wide of the upright.

The visitors came out for the second period and had Lanzarote on the back foot, though keeper Ruyman looked comfortable with the solid defence that he had in front of him.

The moment had come. In the 83^rd minute number 9 came up on the board from the officials and Rosmen´s last home match had come to an end. The striker received a standing ovation and the 40 year old was replaced by a player who was promoted from the now nonexistent B team and was born five years after Rosmen made his debut for the Rojillos.

The 20 year old made quite an impression. In the 87^th minute it was his vision and 40 yard pass that set Miguel Gómez on his way. There is not much of a better sight than seeing this lad in full flight. Even though he was forced wide his blistering pace gave him the opportunity for a strike at goal, he made no mistake planting the ball low in the far corner and sealing a 2-0 win.

There is little change in league standings for both sides but today’s game was about Rosmen and finishing the home season positively.

Lanzarote´s famous number nine still has one match left next week to add to his 142 goals tally that he has scored for the Rojillos.

A presentation from the club was then made to Rosmen in the form of a specially made gold club badge and a framed shirt with his name and number with Eternal Captain written below.

Rosmen´s family, friends and ex players then joined the player for an emotional farewell.

I will write more about Rosmen in the near future however there is still one match remaining next Sunday away versus CD Tenerife B. Lanzarote have little to play for however a win for Tenerife´s B side will elevate them to the final stage of the playoffs. Lanzarote and the Big Man won’t make it easy for them.

Buzanada went into this match with everything to play for and their nerves were eased in the 11^th minute when they took the lead through midfielder Arturo. For the remainder of the half it was the Rojillos who dominated but as has been the case in so many games this season they were unable to find reward for all their hard work.

The balance of play in the second period was even, however it was striker Pirri who scored the winner against Lanzarote in the first game who was there to give his side breathing space in the 74^th minute when he doubled his sides lead to make it 2-0.

Lanzarote continued to press and this hard work paid dividends as substitute Giovanni reduced the deficit to 2-1 in the 83^rd minute making it an uncomfortable ending to the match for the home side.

The Rojillos went in search of that second goal but any hopes of salvaging a draw ended when sub Matías hit home deep into stoppage time to end the match with a 3-1 win.

Buzanada have a super opportunity of progressing to the next stage of the playoffs by only needing one win in their final two games of this group to achieve this.

Lanzarote are currently in fifth spot, one off the bottom. In their two remaining matches they will be fighting to avoid winning the “Wooden Spoon”.

The Rojillos final home game of the season is scheduled (though not confirmed) for this Sunday at 12 noon versus fourth placed side CD Santa Úrsula.

Congratulations to CD Mensajero who are the first of three clubs to gain promotion. The La Palma side will deservedly be playing their football next season in Segunda B (Third Tier).

Tenerife were sitting in third place in the six team playoff promotion league at the start of the day and began the match eager to get into the top two in order to continue to the next level of the playoffs. Their youthful side were passing the ball quickly and Lanzarote had to chase the game.

It wasn’t until the 28^th minute that the Chicharrero´s (Tenerifians) had their first clear chance on goal. The Rojillios conceded the ball trying to play out of defence. Winger Martinez who proved to be a handful for most of the match fed his striker Aythami but his effort from 10 yards was superbly saved with a left hand dive from Alejandro to keep the score level.

Lanzarote´s only strike at goal in the opening half was in the 36^th minute. The ball spun high into the air but Rosmen had kept his eye on it and timed his powerful left foot drive from 10 yards superbly, however his strike hit a defender and the opportunity disappeared.

Three minutes later and with Lanzarote improving as the half progressed Rojillos striker Giovanni timed a run perfectly on the right. He beat the offside trap and had gained a yard on the defender but before he could fire at goal the huge centre back Omar recovered and outmuscled Lanzarote´s January signing and cleared the danger.

The Rojillos came out for the second half with a much more positive attitude and it was the hardworking Javi Morales who tried his luck from 30 yards only two minutes into the half but his effort was always rising and cleared the crossbar by a yard or so.

Only moments later Ayoze Pérez crossed in from the right and once again Javi Morales got in front of the defender but his header went narrowly past the left hand post.

The reply was instant from the Tenerife side. Left back Jeremi teased two Lanzarote defenders then blasted the ball across the face of goal but the pace of the ball didn’t allow striker Diego time to adjust his feet and with an open goal in front of him the ball struck his foot and ricocheted away in the opposite direction to the goal.

In the space of a minute Gopar saw his powerful effort go wide of the left hand post and then Keita bravely won the ball in midfield and released Ayoze Pérez on the right. Lanzarote´s inspirational midfielder fired in a shot across the face of goal, the keeper parried and first to react was the Tenerife defence and another chance had gone.

On the hour the visitors had a wonderful opportunity to go in front. A corner fell kindly to sub Teto, with a free hit at goal from eight yards he smashed the ball but could only hit the left hand post whilst Alejandro looked on helplessly. This was a real let off for the Rojillos.

In the 68^th minute a cross from the right was powerfully headed at goal by the Brazilian centre back Matheus but the keeper was well positioned and managed to fist the ball away.

With ten minutes remaining Lanzarote sub Machín´s trickery in the box fooled two defenders but as this new exciting young winger made room for his strike he was blocked by another defender, the rebound fell to Josua however his strike was also blocked as the third placed side rode their luck.

The visitors went in search of a winner in the closing minutes which would have moved them into second spot but were met by a well organised Lanzarote defence and the points were distributed fairly.

The visitors remain third whilst Lanzarote move off the bottom of the table and into fifth. Next week the Rojillos travel to Tenerife to face leaders CD Buzanada.
